Gene Allen Wheeler, 78, of Etoile, Texas, passed away on January 25, 2014, in a Lufkin, Texas, hospital. He was born on May 26, 1935, in Valparaiso, Indiana, to Fredrich Thomas Wheeler and Margaret Kindt Wheeler. Gene worked in retail as a manager most of his life. Before retiring, he worked in a hobby shop selling model and remote planes, which he also enjoyed flying as a hobby. Gene was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

Preceded in death by his wife, Patsy Wheeler; brother, Jack Wheeler; and granddaughter, Brittney Thomas; Gene is survived by his son, Terry Wheeler and wife, Lisa, of Baytown; daughters, Cherrie Sexton and husband, Bill, of Mont Belvieu and Miket Thomas and husband, John, of Crockett; brother, Jerry Wheeler of Narco, California; sister, Joann Matheaus of Beasley, Texas; grandchildren, Shanacy Knight, Meagan Sexton, Dustin and Jacob Thomas, Kaela, Shawna and Dacota Wheeler; great grandchildren, Jayden Knight, Conner Knight, Kaydence Wheeler, and Avery Wheeler; and other friends and family members.

The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow immediately at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, with Reverend Jim Lamb officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. Frank Avenue, Lufkin, Texas 77904.
