Irene "Wanda" Cox Payne, 83, of Baytown, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2011, at a local nursing home. She was born October 27, 1928, in Baytown, to Willard Wilkes Cox and Marguerite Caroline Watkins Cox. Mrs. Payne was a graduate of Robert E. Lee in 1947 and was active in planning the class reunions. She worked for Citizens Bank from 1947 to 1953 as a bookkeeper and then spent her time as a homemaker. Mrs. Payne was active in Rainbow Girls, served as a Brownie leader and was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. She enjoyed old movies, but especially loved to be around her grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Margaret Hughes; Mrs. Payne is survived by her loving husband of sixty years, Bob Payne; daughters, Carol Evans and husband, Gene, of Baytown, and Linda Liles of Austin; grandchildren, Mark Evans, Julie Evans and Julian Liles; sister-in-law, Helen Boykin, of Dallas; brother-in-law, D. R. Hughes, of Smithville; numerous nieces and nephews; and many other friends and family members.

The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2012, at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 4, 2012, at Oliver Cemetery outside of Smithville, Texas.
