Robert William Maeser was born July 5, 1923, in Baltimore, MD, and died February 12, 2012, in Lafayette, LA. Throughout his life, he lived in Evanston, IL, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, LA, Altadena, CA and for over 50 years in Baytown, TX.
He is survived by his loving wife of 12 years, Clemencia Harrison Maeser, and her five children: Eric Harrison and his wife, Debbie; Terry Lynn Harrison English and her husband, Larry; Brenda Harrison Wendel; Darrell Harrison; and Shannon Harrison Garner and her husband, Robert. He is also survived by his daughter, Carol Maeser Stubbs and her husband, Bill; eight grandsons: John Stubbs and his wife, Victoria; Nathan Stubbs and Drew Stubbs; Mike Pesses and his wife, Sarah; Joe Pesses; Jeremy Loukas and his wife, Donna; Kris Loukas and Nick Jarosh; five great grandchildren: Jackson and Zoe Pesses; Liam Loukas; and Joaquin and Gray Stubbs. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Audrey Pfeffer Maeser, and two daughters, Betsy Maeser Pesses and Wendy Maeser.
Bob Maeser had many interests and talents. He was a chemical engineer and worked at Ethyl Corporation for more than 30 years, overseeing operations and building the alcohol plant in Pasadena, TX. He served on the Texas Chemical Council and the Texas Association of Business. After retirement, he taught chemistry in local schools and at Chinquapin. He was an Eagle Scout. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army in the Pacific Theater. He was a founding member of the Baytown Little Theater, where he enjoyed acting and directing plays. He was a Lay Eucharistic Minister, youth group leader, taught Sunday school and organized historical sightseeing trips for church groups. He was a docent for the Baytown Historical Museum and Battleship Texas. He was an amateur magician and put on magic shows at Baytown area schools, with his daughters as assistants. He enjoyed gourmet cooking and entertaining. He was an artist, having captured his war experience through a book of pen and ink drawings and continuing to produce wood sculptures and paintings throughout his life. He traveled extensively, particularly in retirement, including on more than 40 Elderhostel trips. He was devoted to his family and loved telling them stories and writing letters. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to fall in love and to follow their dreams. He was an enthusiastic consumer of life, and in his later years, when he was not well, he would say, "don't grieve for me, I've had a ball."
The family would like to thank all those who shared his many adventures – most especially those who helped care for him in the past few years: MD Anderson Cancer Center, St. James House, Cornerstone Village South in Lafayette, LA, Faith Hospice and Hospice of Acadiana.
The memorial service for Bob Maeser will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Baytown. The Reverend Nick Novak will officiate. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Trinity Episcopal Church, 5010 N. Main, Baytown, Texas 77521.
