Robert Wayne Ward

Robert Wayne Ward, 82, of Baytown, passed from this earth on Friday, December 28, 2007, heavenward bound by the grace of his Heavenly Father. He was born June 24, 1925, in Cloudchief, Oklahoma, to James Oliver Ward and Jewel Lois Rogers Ward. He had seven brothers and three sisters. The family lived back and forth between Oklahoma and the panhandle of Texas during his early life, eventually making their home in Borger, Texas. Robert loved sports and played football for the Borger Bulldogs in high school, weighing in at only 145 pounds. He later played softball in Japan during World War II and later for the Borger Gasses. Later, he loved to play golf with his many friends. He was a member of the Pruitt and Lobit Streets Church of Christ and had many wonderful friends.

Mr. Ward went into the Army in 1943 and served in the 1303rd Engineer Regiment. He was involved in the invasion of France under General Patton all the way to the Austrian border. He served in England, France, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. He fought in five major battles and received numerous ribbons including the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal before he was honorably discharged in 1946. He married Erma Lee Goodman in 1951 and they had two children. Robert worked for J. M. Huber Corporation for 34 years before retiring in 1984.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Erma Lee Goodman; his brothers, James, Delbert, Coy, Troy, Eddie, Barney, and Glen; and sister, Juanita Bell.

Robert is survived by his wife, Mattie Evelyn Barker Ward; daughter, Cheryl Hollister; son, Waylon Craig Ward; step-children, Darian Barker and Karla Theile; grandchildren; Jamie Wayne Hollister, Rachelle Cyrier, Candice McKee, Leslie Hemmenway, Waylon Jarrid Ward, and Lori K. Ward; step-grandchildren, Alexander and Max Theile; great grandson, Gavin McKee; sisters, Lorene Greer and Billie Jean Feezer. He will be greatly missed by all of his family.

The family will receive friends at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home on Sunday, December 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. The service will be held Monday, December 31 at 11:00 A.M. at Crespo & Jirrels, with Archie Proctor officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, January 1, 2008, at 2:00 P.M. at Connor Cemetery in Dike, Texas. Honoring the family as pallbearers will be Jamie Hollister, Jarrid Ward, Jason McKee, John Cyrier, Jerry Witt, and George Griffin. Honorary pallbearer is W. C. Bogle.
